Dear Mr. Marsh:
I’m a first year graduate student of public policy at George Mason’s School of Public Policy, Government and International Affairs. I graduated from Nanjing Normal University in China with a bachelor degree of Public Administration. I’m writing this letter to apply for a research internship about public policy & evaluation.
As an international student from China, I came to the US since fall of 2015. I practiced verbal, communication and writing skill during three semesters and got good grades. I learned academic English in the first semester which focus on oral and writing skill. I got one A+ and two A in the end of this semester. Last semester, my EAP course helped me learn how to write a good summary and report. These experience greatly enhanced my writing skill and helped me get familiar with American academic culture. These experience will benefit my future internship to avoid misunderstandings when I work with colleagues.
I’m also good at academic research. When I graduated from Nanjing Normal University, a famous university in China, my undergraduate essay got the level “excellent”, only 5% students can get it. I learned many public management theories by reading books, for example new public management theory and new public service theory. After I came to the US, my academic ability improved very quick. It can be reflected from my GPA. last semester I got three A- and my GPA is 3.67. In this semester, I will take an entrance exam about a statistics course. I already have the basic SPSS skill and basic statistics analysis knowledge. I will take a statistics course next semester, so I can cover statistics requirement of the internship. I also think I can bring a global view to your organization. Because I’m a Chinese international student, I can generate some ideas which may differ from other students by big government perspective.
At the third year of my undergraduate study, I studied smart city about Mobil Public service. I gave these ideas, which came from my research paper, to the mayor of the Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province in China. These ideas became a part of smart city in Taiyuan and legislated by the local government.
A resume is attached in this letter to show my education, academic and work experience. I hope to have the chance to meet with you during this semester. I will call your office after several weeks to see if I can get the chance to make an appointment and speak with you. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely
Nan Meng
